Developer kit · not released yet
Ship a local-first iPhone app without solving sync, subscriptions and reminders again.
I’m Sumeet, a solo iOS developer. My pet medication app, PillTail, is live on the App Store and runs on exactly these foundations. I’m considering extracting them into a starter kit, and I’d like to know whether it would be useful to you before I build it.
What it would contain
Planned, not for sale. Each item exists in PillTail today; the work is making it generic and documented.
- Private iCloud sync with SwiftData
- CloudKit-ready models, a safe fallback to local storage, merging of duplicate records after a sync, and the schema-deployment checklist that stops sync silently failing in TestFlight.
- Subscriptions with StoreKit 2
- A free tier and a paid tier, purchase and restore, entitlement checks on launch, and a local StoreKit test file, with no backend and no third-party SDK.
- Reliable local notifications
- Scheduled reminders, actions you can tap from the notification, and a follow-up if nothing was done.
- Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets
- A widget target wired to the same data as the app.
- Seven languages
- A String Catalog with English plus six translations, and the checks that keep it complete.
- Tests and a release script
- Regression tests for the logic that is easy to break, and one command that archives the app and uploads it to App Store Connect.

The sync part is the hardest to get right, so I’ve published it as a small open-source project: a checklist app with the CloudKit rules for SwiftData models, a fallback to local storage, duplicate merging, and tests. Its README lists what is tested and what is not. It has not been run against live iCloud by me, so read it as a reference, not a guarantee.
swiftdata-cloudkit-starter on GitHubWho it is for
Indie developers and small teams building a personal-data iPhone app: trackers, journals, reminders, utilities. Apps where data stays on the device, sync goes through the user’s own iCloud, and revenue comes from a subscription or a one-time purchase.
Not for you if you need a server database, shared data between different people, Android, or a cross-platform stack.
Questions
- Is the kit for sale?
- No. It does not exist as a product yet. I am asking whether it would be useful before I spend weeks extracting it from PillTail. If enough developers say yes, I will build it and tell everyone on this list first.
- What do you do with my email address?
- I write to you about this kit and nothing else, and you can ask me to delete it at any time by emailing privacy@tenacityhq.com. The address is stored in our own Cloudflare account, with the page you came from and anything you chose to type. There are no tracking scripts or cookies on this site.
- Does it need a backend?
- No. Data stays on the device and syncs through each person's own iCloud account. That is the point of the design, and also its limit: it suits personal and small-team utilities, not apps that need a shared server database.
- Is it SwiftUI only, or does it support Expo and React Native?
- SwiftUI and SwiftData, for iPhone, iOS 18 and later. I also build with Expo, but this kit is not for it.
