Guide
What to record when a pet's dose is late or skipped
A good pet medication log answers one question: what actually happened? Not what was planned, and not what you meant to do. Here is what to write down each time, so your vet can see the real picture and decide what comes next.
What to write down every time
- The medication, as it appears on the label or prescription.
- When the dose was due, and when it was actually given, or that it wasn’t.
- Who gave it, if more than one person looks after your pet.
- How it went: took it fine, took only part of it, spat it out, refused it or vomited afterwards.
- If it was skipped, why: refused, vomited, ran out, your vet advised it, or you simply forgot.
- Anything your vet asked you to watch for, in your own words.
What a clear log looks like
| Due | Given | By | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon 8:00 am | 8:10 am | Sam | Took it in food. |
| Mon 8:00 pm | Not given | - | Refused it twice. Told the vet clinic. |
| Tue 8:00 am | 9:40 am | Priya | Late: left the house early. Took it fine. |
Short and specific beats long and vague. “Late: 90 minutes” tells your vet more than “a bit late”.
If a dose is missed
A log can’t tell you what to do about a missed dose, and neither can PillTail. The right answer depends on the medication and on your pet. Ask your vet or pharmacist, and write down what you were told and when, so whoever gives the next dose knows.
How PillTail keeps this record for you
- Doses given early or late are noted automatically, so you always know what really happened.
- Skip a dose and pick a reason (vomited, refused it, vet advised, ran out) or write your own.
- Tapped the wrong thing? Undo it, or correct an older record. Every edit is kept.
- Reminders follow up 15 minutes later if a dose isn’t marked.
- PillTail Plus can export a pet’s history as a PDF to bring to the vet.
Common questions
- Should I give a double dose if I miss one?
- Ask your vet or pharmacist. The right answer depends on the medication and your pet, and neither PillTail nor a log can advise on dosing. Write down what you were told so the next dose is handled the same way.
- How late is too late for a dose?
- Your vet or pharmacist decides that for each medication. PillTail only notes whether a dose was given early or late compared with its schedule, so you can tell them exactly how late it was.
- What if my pet vomits or refuses the medication?
- Record it as it happened, for example refused, spat it out or vomited afterwards, and tell your vet. In PillTail you can pick a reason when you skip a dose or add your own words.
PillTail is a reminder and record-keeping tool, not veterinary advice. Always follow your vet's instructions.
